Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality hosted an Older Persons Conference at the historic Feather Market Hall, organized by the Special Programmes Unit (SPU) in collaboration with the Department of Social Development (DSD), the Office of the Speaker Hon Eugene Johnson, COGTA, IEC, AGE in Action, and the Chairperson of the Nelson Mandela Bay Older Persons Forum (OPF), Ms Elva Koetaan van Zyl.
Ms van Zyl delivered a thoughtful presentation titled “Reflection on the OPF Expectations from All State Institutions and Society in General,” highlighting the collective responsibility toward the well-being and inclusion of older persons. The DSD provided insights into state obligations, societal roles, and the empowerment of the elderly, including a brief reflection on the National Ageing Action Plan (NAAP).
The event featured an interactive brainstorming session, encouraging older persons to openly share their lived experiences, challenges, and recommendations. This meaningful dialogue fostered engagement and is seen as a vital step toward building stronger relationships between stakeholders and the OPF.
